Champ d'Action - Slagwerkgroep Den Haag Nederlands: Al heel vroeg werd minimal music geassocieerd met vier componisten: La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich en Philip Glass. Naast die grote boegbeelden omvat de minimal music echter heel wat andere, niet minder interessante maar vaak vergeten componisten. Dit programma toont het minimalisme als een bredere, pluralistische stroming. Reichs 'Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ' en Glass' 'One + One' en 'Music in Contrary Motion' zijn voorbeelden van onverslijtbare werken uit de radicale beginperiode. Zij worden hier gepresenteerd met films en video's van de minimalistische beeldend kunstenaars Mark Verstockt en Michael Snow. Deze laatste exposeerde destijds in de kunstgalerijen waar Glass en Reich hun eerste concerten speelden. De strenge en zelfs conceptuele aanpak in 'Having never written a note for percussion' van James Tenney, die nog bij de ensembles van Reich en Glass speelde, en van Peter Garland vervolledigen het beeld. Twee werken van Tom Johnson uit de jaren negentig tonen hoe het minimalistisch gedachtegoed na de jaren zeventig actueel bleef. Ook bij Johnson krijgt het conceptuele karakter meer belang, met vier instrumenten die onafhankelijk van elkaar spelen - 'Simultaneous Progressions' -, of in volledig mathematisch ontworpen muziek - 'Automatic Music'. A côté de ces grandes figures de proue, la musique minimale compte cependant beaucoup d'autres compositeurs non moins intéressants mais souvent oubliés. Ce programme présente le minimalisme comme un courant large et pluraliste. La 'Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ' de Reich ainsi que 'One + One' et 'Music in Contrary Motion' de Glass sont des exemples d'œuvres inusables de la période radicale initiale. On les présente ici dans le cadre de films et vidéos des artistes plasticiens minimalistes Mark Verstockt et Michael Snow. À l'époque, ce dernier a exposé dans les galeries d'art où Glass et Reich avaient donné leurs premiers concerts. L'image est complétée par l'approche sévère et même conceptuelle de 'Having never written a note for percussion' de James Tenney, qui jouait encore avec les ensembles de Reich et Glass, et par celle de Peter Garland. Deux œuvres de Tom Johnson des années nonante montrent que la pensée minimaliste est restée actuelle après les années septante. Chez Johnson aussi, le caractère conceptuel a pris davantage d'importance, comme dans le cas des quatre instruments qui jouent indépendamment l'un de l'autre - 'Simultaneous Progressions'-, ou d'une musique entièrement créée de manière mathématique - 'Automatic Music'. English: From very early on, minimal music was associated with four composers: La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. However, in addition to these major icons, minimal music also includes very different and no less interesting composers who are nonetheless often forgotten. This programme reveals minimalism as a broader, pluralistic movement. Reich's 'Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ' and Glass's 'One + One' and 'Music in Contrary Motion' are examples of immortal works from the movement's radical early period. They are presented here with films and videos by the minimalist artists Mark Verstockt and Michael Snow. The latter exhibited in the art galleries where Glass and Reich gave their first concerts. The austere, even conceptual approach of 'Having Never Written a Note for Percussion' by James Tenney, who also played in Reich's and Glass's ensembles, and Peter Garland's piece 'The Three Strange Angels' round out the evening. Two works by Tom Johnson from the 1990s demonstrate how minimalist ideas remained topical after the 1970s. There is also more of a focus on the conceptual nature of Johnson's music, which uses four instruments that play independently of one another - 'Simultaneous Progressions' - or on entirely mathematically created music - 'Automatic Music'. |
