Summary

Description

Tinted lithograph of Harrogate Cemetery (now Grove Road Cemetery), Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Published by T. Hollins, bookseller, Harrogate. Printed by Banks & Sons, Edinbburgh. John Peele Clapham laid the foundation stone for the right hand chapel in 1863. The chapels were designed by Thomas Charles Sorby.

The right hand chapel (as seen in the picture) was nonconformist, and the land in front of it was not consecrated. The left hand chapel was ecclesiastical (Anglican) and was consecrated along with the land in front of it, by the Bishop of Ripon.

Note that when they built pairs of chapels like this, they often built the Anglican one very slightly taller than the other one. Also, some of the detailing differs between the two buildings here.
