Koor & Orkest Collegium Vocale Gent . Philippe Herreweghe Nederlands: Henry Purcell moest als hofcomponist regelmatig odes componeren ter ere van leden van de koninklijke familie. Een praktijk die meteen na de restauratie van de monarchie onder Charles II in 1660 werd ingesteld en uitgroeide tot een typisch Engelse traditie die tot ver in de achttiende eeuw standhield. Purcell schreef er ruim twintig. 'Who can from joy refrain?' uit 1695, Purcells laatste ode, schreef hij ter ere van de verjaardag van de Duke of Gloucester, de zoon van Prinses Anne. Het is een opmerkelijk lichtvoetig werk, vol memorabele melodische vondsten. De drie jaar eerder gecreëerde grote ode voor de feestdag van de patroonheilige van de muziek, Sint Caecilia, is een van Purcells meest beklijvende werken. Deze drie kwartier durende lofzang is gewijd aan de kracht van de muziek. Purcell hanteert felle kleuren, aanstekelijke ritmes en onweerstaanbare 'grounds' of variaties op een ostinaat patroon in de bas, nog zo'n typisch Engelse bijdrage tot de barokmuziek. C'est une œuvre d'une légèreté remarquable, pleine de trouvailles mélodiques mémorables. La grande ode créée trois ans auparavant pour la fête de Sainte Cécile, patronne de la musique, est une des œuvres de Purcell les plus célèbres. Cette ode de trois quarts d'heures est consacrée à la force de la musique. Purcell y manie des couleurs vives, des rythmes communicatifs et des irrésistibles 'grounds' ou variations sur un modèle ostinato dans la basse, encore une contribution typiquement anglaise à la musique baroque. Purcell wrote around twenty pieces. 'Who can from joy refrain?' from 1695 was Purcell's last ode, which he wrote in honour of the Duke of Gloucester's (the son of Princess Anne) birthday. It is a noticeably nimble piece, full of memorable melodic ideas. Three years previously, he created a lengthy ode for the saint's day of Cecilia, patron saint of music. This is one of Purcell's most impressive pieces. This 45 minute-long hymn bears testament to the power of music. Purcell weaves bright colours, infectious rhythms and irresistible 'grounds' or variations on a leading ostinato in the bass, yet another typical English contribution to Baroque music. The programme is completed by Purcell's Te Deum with its lavish instrumentation. The foundations of this work are provided by several vocal soloists, unlike Handel's Te Deum, where the chorus plays the leading part. |
