Met Beethovenianen par excellence Faust-Queyras-Melnikov. Beethoven had een voorliefde voor het pianotrio. In 1795 liet hij zich in Wenen voor het eerst opmerken met zijn opus 1, drie ambitieuze pianotrio’s die opvielen door hun ongewone dimensies: ze hebben geen drie delen, zoals toen gebruikelijk, maar vier. Ook liet Beethoven meteen zien hoe expressief zijn kamermuziek was. Qua muzikale intensiteit moeten ze niet onder doen voor de toenmalige pianosonates of strijkkwartetten. De melodische vindingrijkheid van het Derde, meest gedurfde trio uit de serie, zou Haydn zelfs diep hebben geschokt. We horen Beethoven ten voeten uit: abrupte contrasten en onstuimige retoriek, afgewisseld met intense pathos en lyrisch verlangen. En 1795, il se fit remarquer une première fois à Vienne grâce à son opus 1, trois trios avec piano ambitieux, aux dimensions peu habituelles. En effet, ils ne comptent pas trois parties, comme il était de coutume à l'époque, mais quatre. Beethoven démontra d'emblée combien sa musique de chambre était expressive. En intensité musicale, ces œuvres ne le cèdent en rien aux sonates pour piano ou aux quatuors pour cordes de l'époque. L'ingéniosité mélodique du troisième trio, le plus audacieux de la série, aurait même profondément choqué Haydn. Voici Beethoven dans toute sa splendeur : les contrastes abrupts et la rhétorique fougueuse alternent avec le pathos intense et l'aspiration lyrique.
