MOS:ALT, perhaps I should start a conversation there about this as well. Either way, please let me know if there is another place I should be reading about the policy for this particular situation. Assuming it is the latter and there is no established consensus/policy/guideline on this particular issue, would it be a problem to leave the alt text up here as an example for that larger discussion? Hi. The alt text belongs on the article where the image is used, not the image page. If that is a problem, start a conversation, but I don't understand why you would want the text to appear in multiple places. Cheers. — Film Fan 15:11, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the "not the image page" assertion stated? I can't find it anywhere I've looked. The

WP:ACCIM guideline only mentions Detailed image descriptions, where not appropriate for an article, should be placed on the image description page, with a note saying that activating the image link will lead to a more detailed description. about image description pages having (or not having) this type of information. Having said that, I did a little digging in the archives of that talk page and I can see this is a lot more contentious issue than I first realized... My rationale for having the alt text appear here was to make the image on this page accessible in addition to the article where the image is used, as per the MOS:ALT essay and WP:ACCIM guideline. There was actually a proposal at one point to always have a "default" alt text that is defined at the image page and then transcluded into article space (or overridden with more appropriate alt text for the specific context present in a given article). It had support but it was dropped due to lack of expertise to actually write the code to implement the change. Anyway, this isn't really a big deal. I'm just trying to understand.
