Jeff Katz (born 1960)[1] is an American commercial photographer. He was the personal photographer and official tour photographer for musician Prince for over a decade, and shot the covers of multiple Prince albums. His early work was primarily photographing recording artists, and he later moved on to the fields of advertising, magazines, sports, book publishing, music, television, and motion picture industries.

Photography

Jeff Katz was born in

Rolling Stone Magazine.[3][4]

He has photographed contemporary figures, artists and performers including Olivia Munn,[5] LL Cool J,[6][7] Earth, Wind & Fire,[8] Marie Osmond,[9] Denzel Washington,[10][11] Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis, Samantha Hoopes,[12] Ozzy Osbourne,[13][14] Mel Gibson,[15] John Densmore,[16] and Vanilla Ice.[17]

Collaboration with Prince

While in his early 20s, Jeff Katz was the primary personal photographer and collaborator for the musician Prince. In 1984, Warnes Bros. offered him the position of assistant photographer on the set of Prince's

Under The Cherry Moon filmed in Nice, France.[18][3][19] He then became Prince's official tour photographer, and collaborated for 11 years from 1985 to 1996, creating over fifty photo sessions with him and his roster of artists.[20][21]
Katz shot the covers of the Parade (1986) and Sign o' the Times (1987) albums.[3] He also photographed Prince's wedding to
Mayte García in 1996.[21]

In 2019, Katz was a guest speaker at the Prince Celebration at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, where he shared stories of his shoots with Prince.[20][22] His photographs of Prince are displayed on the walls of Paisley Park, including a room dedicated to the Under The Cherry Moon film. In an agreement with Prince's estate, Katz has an online art gallery showcasing his historic and iconic images of Prince. In 2020, a 120-page hardcover book having unseen photographs from Katz were published as part of Paisley Park's rerelease of Prince's Sign o' the Times recording.[3][23][24]
