John William Mellor
John William Mellor
QC (26 July 1835 – 13 October 1911) was an English lawyer and Liberal Party
politician.
Born in London, the eldest of the eight sons[Queen's Bench Division of the High Court, Mellor was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.[1]
In 1860 he married Caroline Paget, daughter of Charles Paget, MP.[2]
He became a
Judge Advocate General from February to August 1886. In 1878 Mellor was involved in the Whistler v Ruskin
libel trial.
He was
Patriotic Fund in 1898. A passionate Protestant he attended and spoke at the United Protestant Demonstration in London on 29 January 1900 which resolved ) "to uphold and maintain the Protestantism of the nation and to demand the suppression of the Mass and the Confessional in the Established Church."[3]
He was appointed a
Privy Counsellor
in 1886.
