The town was formed in 1837 from the town of Erwin.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.9 square miles (98 km²), of which 37.5 square miles (97 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (0.90%) is water.

• Lindley – The hamlet of Lindley is near the center of the town on US Route 15 and the east bank of the Tioga River.
• Presho – A hamlet in the north part of the town on US Route 15 and on the west bank of the Tioga River.
