Mideeye Political Association (Somali: Urur Siyaasadeedka Mideeye) is the political party in Puntland.[1]
Establishment
On 19 July 2020, a political association named Mideeye was established with a focus on unity and purpose in Puntland. The organization showcased political influence through diverse high-profile participants, including former ministers from previous Puntland administrations. Founders, regional representatives, religious leaders, and women's groups participated in the inaugural conference.[2]
During the conference's second day, Dahir Haji Khalif, a former Puntland Minister, was elected as the Chairman of Mideeye. The Central Committee also elected Najah Mohamud Ali as the First Deputy Chairman, Abdallah Sheikh Ahmed Yusuf as the Second Deputy Chairman, and Abshir Omar Huruse as the Secretary General. To show a more inclusive political agenda, Mideeyee also became the first political organization in Puntland to appoint a woman to a senior political leadership role.[3]
Three former Puntland presidential candidates also became members of Mideeye, increasing the organization's political significance. The organization aimed to win the Puntland Presidency, maintaining strong relations with the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States.[4]
Party Leaders
On 4 August 2023, Mideeye became an official political party. Its first actions were to strongly condemn recent illegal actions performed by the Puntland government and members of parliament who claimed to have changed the constitution. Expressing concern about delayed case filing to the constitutional court, Mideeye criticized the President's speech on 1 August as a misrepresentation and cover-up.[5]
In a press release, Mideeye called on the international community to refrain from participating in an election that was not agreed upon, emphasizing the need for traditional elders to unite and take responsibility for Puntland's governing. The party urged various sections of society, opposition politicians, and political stakeholders to address the political crisis. As the largest opposition party in Puntland, Mideeye emphasized the serious threat the political crisis posed to the stability of the semi-autonomous state, warning of potential violence and instability if the election was not held in a free and fair manner.[6]
