On 13 May 2024, a hoarding in the Ghatkopar suburb of Mumbai, collapsed following heavy rains.[2][3] It led to the deaths of 17 people, with 75 injured victims being rescued from underneath the hoarding in a 66-hour search-and-rescue.[1]

Incident

The hoarding was constructed illegally, with a size of 120x120 feet, as opposed to the permissible size of 40×40 feet.

The search-and-rescue operation ended on 10:30 am on 16 May, about 66 hours after the incident.[4][5][6]

Aftermath

Following the incident, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued orders for the immediate removal of similar hoardings nearby.[7] On May 16, the owner of the hoarding was booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and various other charges.[8]

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced financial aid of ₹500,000 to the next of kin of each person killed in the incident.[2]
