History

Philadelphia was founded in the early 1820s by William Knox and Jacob Pearson. The town initially grew quickly and prospered as a center of business in the Sweetwater Valley. By the mid-19th century, Philadelphia had two general stores, a tanning yard, a stillhouse, and a hotel.[7]

On October 20, 1863, during the

Civil War, two Confederate cavalry regiments attacked and routed a Union brigade at Philadelphia while conducting maneuvers following the Battle of Chickamauga. The Confederates captured 700 soldiers, 6 cannon, and 50 supply wagons.[8]

On October 20, 2001, there was a reenactment of the events in 1863.

Geography

Philadelphia is situated along

Sweetwater Creek, which empties into the Watts Bar Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River
a few miles to the north.

Philadelphia is concentrated around an area northwest of the junction of U.S. Route 11 (Lee Highway), which connects Philadelphia with Loudon to the north and Sweetwater to the south, and State Route 323 (Pond Creek Road), which connects Philadelphia with Interstate 75 to the west.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all land.

The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,563, and the median income for a family was $39,792. Males had a median income of $30,875 versus $14,318 for females. The
