Polk was laid out in 1849.^[4] A post office called Polk has been in operation since 1846.^[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.03 square miles (2.67 km²), of which 1.01 square miles (2.62 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km²) is water.^[6]
