Théâtre-Italien in Paris. The libretto by Giovanni Emanuele Bidera was based Casimir Delavigne's play, which was in turn inspired by Lord Byron's 1820 blank verse tragedy Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice. The opera is based on events in the life of Marino Faliero, the 55th Doge of Venice who was beheaded in 1355.
