- Chicago and Alton Railroad 1899-1908, Chicago Great Western Railway1909-1925, dies (b. 1853).
- 1971 – A runaway train carrying 350 passengers, mostly children, derails next to a 12-metre deep (39 ft) ravine near Vicuña, Chile, killing twelve people.
- 2004 – 191 people are killed and more than 2,000 are injured when a series of bombs explode on commuter trains in Madrid, Spain (memorial pictured).
- intermodal train at Rochelle, Illinois; the trains don't derail but a few containers are destroyed. The entire event is recorded on the Trainsmagazine Rochelle webcam.
