In his 1990 book The Complete Guide to Role-Playing Games, game critic Rick Swan compared this game to its predecessor, Robotech, and found "With its expanded skill lists, extensive background material, and brief but adequate introductory scenarios, Sentinels emphasizes role-playing more than Robotech and is therefore a more interesting game." Swan concluded by giving this game a solid rating of 3 out of 4, saying, "It's not for newcomers — players who have never heard of Macross, Mecha, or other elements of the Robotech universe won't have a clue what this is all about — but fans of the Japanese cartoons will find plenty to enjoy."[1]
