Sharpsburg was founded in 1884 as a stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. A post office was established in 1886, and the city was incorporated in 1905.^[4]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.37 square miles (0.96 km²), of which 0.36 square miles (0.93 km²) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km²) is water.^[5]
