CEPRES International University is a private university in Liberia, established in response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak. The university provides education in environmental and public health to address local healthcare needs.

History

Inception During the 2014 Ebola Outbreak

CEPRES International University was conceived during the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia, a period that exposed deficiencies in the healthcare system. Dr. Mogana S. Flomo Jr.,[1] who was pursuing his Ph.D. in Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, initiated the establishment of a training center aimed at addressing these healthcare gaps. The center initially offered specialized training in environmental and public health to improve the capabilities of the local health system.[2]

Transformation to University

Initially envisioned as a training center, the institution faced skepticism from existing universities regarding its collaborative training model. As a result, it adopted an independent approach and, by May 2015, became CEPRES International University. The university commenced its first classes with nearly 200 students.[3]

Key Milestones

  • Founding Date: CEPRES International University was founded in November 2014.
  • Government Recognition: The university received formal recognition from the Government of Liberia on February 10, 2015.[4]
  • First Graduation: The university held its first graduation ceremony in February 2016, celebrating the achievements of its initial cohort of students.[5]

Schools

CEPRES International University comprises several schools, each specializing in different fields of study:

  • Public & Allied Health Sciences
  • Business & Policy Studies
  • Environmental & Development Studies
  • Professional Studies
  • Applied Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Education

Development and Expansion

Since its inception, CEPRES International University has expanded its academic programs and infrastructure. The university collaborates with various international organizations and institutions, such as ForumCiv and Cuttington University, to implement programs aimed at sustainable development and community service.[6] Additionally, CEPRES is partnered with Crown International Education.[7] Affiliated with the International Academic and Management Association (IAMA), CEPRES International University offers graduate programs.[8]

The university has graduated over 500 students who have contributed to the fields of environmental and health sciences both in Liberia and internationally.[9]
