I'll post a review of this article shortly. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:29, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've posted the initial review. I'm putting it on hold so the notes listed below can be addressed. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 00:45, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All items have been addressed, and I have no further concerns. Now designating the article as GA. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 13:57, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well-written
  • The
    MOS:LEADSENTENCE
could be more concise. It should just have one or maybe two major aspects of who she is. Then the second sentence can elaborate with more detail.
  • Done.
  • The lead as a whole is a bit short, and it might benefit from a few more sentences so it can provide a full summary of the article.
  • Done.
  • This is entirely optional, but her approximate birth year could be added to "early life". That way it wouldn't need a citation in the lead.
  • Moved.
  • She studied physical education and dance – This should specify that it was in college. It's especially confusing because the next sentence is about when she was a teenager, so the order should probably be switched as well.
  • Done.
  • "Epiphany" isn't ideal for a section heading.
  • Renamed.
  • The Epiphany section might work better if it was in chronological order. Right now it starts with the transition, it goes forward into analysis, but then it jumps back to the events leading up to the change.
  • Done.
  • Each summer she and her partner Victor Van Kooten – Does "partner" mean business partner or
    life partner
    ?
  • Both. Edited.
  • to explore the prana energy that in her view animates and guides the body – It's good that this attributes the opinion about prana, but the current wording still implies credibility to prana in wikivoice, only suggesting that her interpretation of it is debatable rather than the entire concept.
  • Edited.
  • Another suggestion that in no way affects GA status: perhaps the two paragraphs covering analysis of her teaching could be put in their own subsection.
  • Done.
  • The "superstar" yoga teacher Donna Farhi – Subjective descriptors like this do not belong in wikivoice, and
    MOS:SCAREQUOTES
should be avoided. I mention this below in the sourcing as well, but it should probably be removed.
  • Removed.
  • She then became a leading yoga teacher in her own right. – It's unclear whether this is referring to Farmer or Wildcroft. It might be better to include this as part of the previous sentence rather than have it in its own sentence.
  • Named.
  • Wildcroft likens her to Vanda Scaravelli, a yoga teacher who studied directly under B. K. S. Iyengar – This implies that Farmer didn't study under B. K. S. Iyengar. An "also" would fix this.
  • Reworded.
  • Wildcroft reports that – Avoid "reports" as a synonym for said, as it provides undue credibility for an opinion.
  • Reworded.
  • Wildcroft's thoughts about Van Kooten seem out of place, as they're right in the middle of a comparison between Farmer and Scaravelli.
  • Moved.
  • Just one sentence doesn't really warrant its own "In the media" section. I suggest integrating her film appearance into the "teaching" section.
  • Merged.
Verifiable with no original research
  • "My Yoga Journey" doesn't appear to be reliable. It looks like a self published source. Given that it only supports the word "superstar", it might be best to remove this altogether.
  • Removed. She's so well-known that it's fine that it's published on her bluelinked authority, but since we aren't saying superstar we don't need it.
  • What makes Gates (2006) a reliable source? I'm having trouble finding anything establishing credibility for the author or the publisher.
  • Gates is a well-known yoga teacher. The book is a scholarly study of women in yoga. Mandala is a professional publishing house; this was before the era of self-publishing. Mandala has now been acquired by Simon & Schuster where it remains as an authoritative imprint on matters such as meditation and mindfulness. They're (re)releasing the book on Kindle this July.

Spot checks:

  • [1] Cummins (2007) – Checked all ten uses. In "early life", it seems to support growing up in London but nothing else it's in front of. In "Teaching", it doesn't seem to support that she teaches in those different places with the exception of Lesbos. All other uses are good.
  • Repositioned one ref; added refs for other places.
  • [3] Brown – Does this support that they taught together for over 25 years?
  • Yes.
  • [4] Zhuravlev and Rush – Does this support that she studied in Pune?
  • Just says "India". Iyengar had not built his Institute at that time (so as Gates says, she was taught "in a small room in a house"). Cited to Gates.
  • [7] Cler (2015) – This source says 1967, not 1982. Also watch for
    close paraphrasing
, as became the first retailer of "sticky mats" is just about identical to the source.
  • Fixed.
Broad in its coverage

This article is very short, though for the most part, I think it covers the major aspects. I have found a few things that might warrant further consideration:

  • Who is Van Kooten? Where did she meet him?
  • Glossed and added a ref. Can't find the meeting place described anywhere.
  • Farmer seems to be involved in activism and humanitarian work.
  • Added.
  • Has Farmer published any written works?
  • None I can find, and it's not her style. I've added her DVD.
