Edward IV

Edward IV wasn't killed at Barnet, the Earl of Warwick "the Kingmaker" and his brother, the Marquess of Montagu, were killed by Edward's troops. Fire Star 03:52, 5 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Highest point

I've removed a variety of uncited claims about highest points in or near Barnet, which looked like a debate on the subject. MRSCTalk 11:32, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

And I have deleted the uncited claim from the article. It is clearly not true: Barnet lies at 130m / 427 ft, but there is higher ground at places all along the intervening chalk ridge from Royston westwards, specifically including Jacks Hill south of Baldock, on the Great North Road, as some say "highest point on Great North Road" ( 134m / 440 ft TL 23550 29627). (Source spot heights and contours from the Ordnance Survey 1:25000 map (Memory Map 2014 (digital edition)). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.3.255.103 (talk) 23:39, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Could someone please restore the information apparently lost through what seems to be a misedit in the passage about the church? Frans Fowler 20:20, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Barnet or High Barnet?

Shouldn't the article be called High Barnet to avoid confusion with Barnet district? See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Districts_of_Brent — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenorb (talkcontribs) 21:37, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

There is a separate article here: London Borough of Barnet (as stated at the start). Philafrenzy (talk) 21:43, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
True but I agree with Kenorb that High Barnet would be better. Indeed the article starts by referring to High and Chipping Barnet, not Barnet. Should Chipping Barnet have a separate article? My A to Z shows it as different area from High Barnet. Dudley Miles (talk) 00:23, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Requested move 01 November 2014

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: consensus to move Barnet (disambiguation) to Barnet, and move this article to Chipping Barnet. If another title besides Chipping Barnet is still desired or needed, please initiate a new discussion. Dekimasuよ! 23:12, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

BarnetHigh Barnet – The name is ambiguous as the London Borough of Barnet is often referred to as just Barnet. I usually say I live in Finchley, but sometimes in Barnet. The article starts "High Barnet or Chipping Barnet", often abbreviated to Barnet, and it is better that the title is the correct full name. Barnet (disambiguation) could then be moved to Barnet. --Relisted. Dekimasuよ! 20:31, 9 November 2014 (UTC) Dudley Miles (talk) 13:07, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Note. There appears to be consensus to move this page and the disambiguation page. Please see the discussion section below to help sort out the desired title for this article. Dekimasuよ! 20:31, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Support I used to live in Gordon Rd, Finchley Central. I was often up in or passing through "Barnet" but the name was always used on the understanding that it was a shortening of the real title. The full title is also often used. WP:AT requires description and a barnet is also rhyming slang in the UK for hair as a reference to Barnet Fair. These are just two of the disambiguation items that can move to Barnet it the natural High Barnet disambiguation is used. (adding signature late sorry for incorrect date stamp

  • Oppose If anything the article should be Chipping Barnet. My detailed London atlas just says Barnet in large letters over the town of Chipping Barnet and doesn't mention High Barnet at all apart from showing the tube station High Barnet (which is in Chipping Barnet). The current article and Barnet navigation box have clearly been carefully thought through and we should let them be. For comparison, we have Ealing and London Borough of Ealing and that too is correct. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:01, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • My atlas has High Barnet north of Wood Street and Chipping Barnet south of it. High Barnet tube seems to be in Chipping Barnet, but station names are often a bit odd - West Finchley station is east of Finchley Central. There is a case for two articles on Chipping and High Barnet, but this would require a fair amount of work by someone. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:58, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • That's the point isn't it? Every atlas will have slightly different labels for what is essentially the same place. How will they be disambiguated? What is the difference between High Barnet and Chipping Barnet? Very little as far as I can see. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:13, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
I worry that modern book bound map information may potentially be simplistic, skewed and driven by agendas other than the development of encyclopaedic content. For instance some may have a simple agenda of helping people get from A-Z. I don't personally think that this is a big issue and am happy for admin to make a decision. Otherwise some historical references might also be of help.

(Presumably means support for Barnet (disambiguation) to be moved to Barnet, with no opinion about where to move Barnet. Dekimasuよ! 01:36, 11 November 2014 (UTC))
  • Support for a move to Chipping Barnet (as below). There is no reason Barnet cannot become a disambig page. Dudley Miles (talk) 10:11, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:
  • There seems to be a majority for re-naming, but not consensus for one name. I originally proposed High Barnet, but on reflection I think Chipping Barnet would be better, as both the historic name according to the Victoria County History at [1] and the current name of the constituency. Barnet (area) would be a second choice, leaving Barnet to be the disambig. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:16, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

I do not want to be rude, but is it possible that one of the supporters of this move starts fixing the links to disambiguation pages, created by this move? For instance, in Template:Birch Brothers RDT. And the (non-talk)-pages listed here. Thanks in advance. The Banner talk 19:25, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Did this article used to be called "Barnet" rather than "Chipping Barnet"? If so, why was it moved? Justgravy (talk) 23:33, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
