Citation needed - King Jimmy

I just find it hard to beleive there was an African nation/tribe at the end of the 1700's led by a man with the name of King Jimmy. Creol 13:17, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

King Jimmy Market is a pretty important place in Freetown, and King Jimmy and King Tom did, indeed exist. I wonder how they took those names? Perhaps I'll learn when the redlinks get blued. Population estimates

I propose that we keep the official 2004 census data quoted in the Sierra Leone Encyclopedia and in various other places on the web, because other websites seem to give contradictory estimates which sometimes include the non-urban population of the district. dbfirs 20:57, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

rainfall numbers are wrong by about 30x

The rainfall estimates seem to be daily, but for other cities such as New York City, it seems to be a monthly number. How do I know? I presently live in New York City, and when there's two or three inches of rain in a day, it makes the nightly news, with earnest reporters on the scene.

I also lived for two years in Freetown some time ago, and I can assure you that it really does rain a foot each a day during June and July -- and then, for two weeks in August, it rains 24/7.

I think that what happened is that someone took the daily numbers and interpreted them as monthly numbers. But I have first-hand evidence that Freetown rains much more than New York.

The rainfall figures in the table are accurate averages for each month (as cited). We had over 15 inches of rain in July where I live (Northern England), so I am pleased to note that there are some places more than twice as wet! Dbfirs 15:57, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]


Western Area Urban District

Does Freetown have any administration seperate from Western Area Urban District, or are these one-and-the-same with Freetown simply being an urban settlement (without and associated local government) within the Western Area Urban District? --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:13, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling

The article is written mostly in US rather than Commonwealth spelling.

No, Sierra Leone tends to use Commonwealth English, though not exclusively. It is possible that the capital has more American influences. Dbfirs 23:32, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removed unverified claim

I removed the claim about it previously being a slave market, as it had a "citation needed" from what I consider to be a sufficiently long time ago (2010), and I didn't think it was relevant, especially if it's not undeniably true.

I'm fairly new to editing, though, so I thought that it would be best to leave a comment here explaining what I did, so that more experienced editors can see if they approve, and if they don't, revert the edit.

No objection to your removal of dubious claims. I usually look to see whether such statements can be backed up before removing them. In this case, we (various editors since 2010) have been negligent in not replacing the tag with appropriate citations. Some of the hits in my Google search seem to be just copies of Wikipedia, but a couple do seem to independently support the claim, though rather weakly. I can't find a really reliable source, so I won't revert your edit, but perhaps we'll expand the history section and add some cites for the Cotton Tree area previously being a Portugese slave market. African American Founders?

I changed it to Black because it seems unlikely that in the late 1700s there were Africans who went to North America and then came back so I'm changing it to black 174.3.129.55 (talk) 22:26, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
