Created framework

I've created the framework for the glossary, and put in 1333 items from the SAAMI glossary referenced at the bottom. To do this, I reaped the SAAMI website, removed the definitions (which would be covered by copyright), converted "Y, X" items into "X Y" form, sorted, pruned out duplicate items, and converted everything to lower case. The items are hidden in comment characters in the appropriate sections. Grab a term, move it up to the appropriate spot (make sure you delete it from the hidden list) and write a definition in your own words. You can use the SAAMI glossary to verify that you're not contradicting it; if you are, or if you add a term not from the SAAMI glossary, then you should provide a specific reference for that. scot 14:50, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

References

I've put in two references at the bottom, to the SAAMI glossary and MidwayUSA's GunTec Dictionary, as overall references for the article. These should cover all the terms I put in there (since I reaped the starting terms from the SAAMI's glossary) plus most others you can think of. Check these two sources when you add a term, to make sure your definition agrees with them. Any definitions to existing terms NOT covered by GunTec or SAAMI, or any terms not listed in either of those sources should have an explicit reference. scot 15:44, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Helpful hint

Someone has gone to the trouble of putting a whole bunch of needed terms in comments inside the article. Just click "edit" on any letter and you'll see some terms that need definitions. AliveFreeHappy (talk) 21:36, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added "assault weapon" to this list. Someone more qualified than I needs to add that definition to the open part of the glossary, as well as the terms "automatic" and "semiautomatic." Those are terms which cause great confustion/obfuscation in the political debate. Anonymous. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.237.78.215 (talk) 09:32, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bandoleer

Pocketed belts are most certainly used for modern military weapons for holding magazines, at least they were in use for M-16s during Vietnam. And they were commonly referred to as "Bandoleers". Is this usage a violation of some technicality which restricts the term "bandoleer" to a belt holding only individual cartridges?Wschart (talk) 12:39, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The "technicality" is WP:V. If there are many reliable sources on this you should add it to the article
Bandoleer and then add a modification to the def here. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 13:17, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply

Bayonet lug, etc

We have short, often unsourced articles on topics like Bayonet lug. The most appropriate disposition may be to merge in the basic definitions to this glossary rather than leaving unsourced articles. Rezin (talk) 19:05, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Assault rifle.

An assault rifle is select-fire weapon - meaning it can be fired in semi-automatic and automatic (burst fire is a variation of automatic) - firing an intermediate cartridge. For example, the M16 and M4 are assault rifles, but AR-15s are merely rifles (technically "Modern Sporting Rifles). 65.29.225.236 (talk) 21:41, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
