I will review this article for GA over the next couple of days. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 02:41, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Initial comments/suggestions

Nice work, Hawkeye, I have the following suggestions: AustralianRupert (talk) 07:54, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • in the lead: "Long Island (Papua New Guinea) was an..." I wonder if the piping should be hidden, and also whether the location of the island should be clarified more. For instance, may be this might work: "Long Island, situated blah blah blah, was an important staging point for Japanese barges..." I would also suggest maybe clarifying the area that the barges were being used, e.g. "important staging point for Japanese barges operating between X and Y", or something similar (suggest adding this to the Background section also)
checkY Added. The piping has been hidden; it was uncovered by an editor when the article ran on the front page as a DYK. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • "wiped out by a volcanic eruption..." do we know when roughly (perhaps state the year, if know)?
checkY Uh, well, the Allied Geographic Section report says "in the last 150 years", but I believe that it was the 1660 eruption, which
  • PT boat is overlinked in the Landing section
    checkY Resolved.
  • "and it was feared that the Japanese..." --> "...feared by Allied planners that the Japanese?"
checkY No, by the garrison. Added a bit. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Images: are there any photos of the landing, or forces involved, or even the radar station? If not, it isn't a drama, but it would certainly improve the article if one could be added
Not that I could find. I'd settle for much less, like a half decent map. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, potentially this one might be a bit less cluttered, although it doesn't specifically label Long Island. File:New guinea.png. AustralianRupert (talk) 22:56, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • "cut the Japanese supply line, which was by barges moving along the coast..." --> perhaps clarify which coast
    checkY Added a bit. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • "aircraft coming from Madang...": suggest linking Madang here
    Already linked above. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • "difficulty keeping the equipment operational": do we know why? Was it because of the climate?
    checkY Yes. Added a bit. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Do we know how long the radar station remained on the island? This source seems to have something on pp. 68-69: [1]
    checkY Added that. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the Huon Peninsula campaign should be mentioned somewhere in the lead and the body of the article
    checkY Done. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:46, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
