you left out Sam Latter, scotland's oldest man. 65.81.247.52 (talk) 13:36, 25 April 2010 (UTC) http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/features/-Football-star-Sam-in.5955548.jp

I think hes notable foor being Scotland's oldest man and football star. 72.155.236.201 (talk) 19:30, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

He needs to have his own article before he is included here. Being Scotland's oldest man on its own is insufficent for inclusion here and possibly not even for his own article. if it can be confirmed that he was a professional footballer then that would be sufficient for an article and therefore for this list. Well since his notability qualifies under
WP:ATHLETE ("People who have competed at the fully professional level of a sport"), he would not be eligible for deletion, or rather, he would clearly meet the inclusion guidelines. Canadian Paul

Major League Ballplayers

The template used for these footnotes generates a bullet where it doesn't belong. Would someone who knows how to fix this please do so? It's beyond my technical prowess. Thanks. David in DC (talk) 22:14, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Solved, with help from kind editor at Village Pump (technical) David in DC (talk) 17:02, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Introductory text

Should not the introductory text read like this: The following is a list of centenarians – specifically, people who became famous as sportspeople – known for reasons other than their longevity. For more lists, see lists of centenarians. ? --94.113.5.35 (talk) 15:13, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Actually I don't really like either and I think that they should be changed based on
WP:SAL should cover the need for them to have Wikipedia articles. Realistically though, if we ever add proper leads to these lists, the problem would be moot. Canadian Paul

Johs Elviken

Hello the Norwegian speed skater no:Johannes Elviken participated at World Speed Skating Championships in Allround 1937 and at the European championships in speed skating 1938. He died last year and became 103 years and several days. I guess he would be worthy a place in this list too, although he is missing an english article. Here is this new source for Helen Nicol, a female baseball player. Besides, she turned 101 this year so fix it by adding 104. 24.45.6.110 (talk) 00:26, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Shan Deniston

@DerbyCountyinNZ: Could you please explain why you removed my entry of Shan Deniston? He definitely was notable for reasons other than his longevity, just look at the 40+ references in the article that were made prior to him turning 100. Thanks. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:51, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Wiki has been going for 20 years and no-one bothered to start an article about him until months after he died. Why? Does he pass any of the sports notability criteria? He seems to have played only in the minor leagues, would he pass
WP:NCOLLATH? If not then he is merely someone who made it to 100 and had a long association with sports which is enough for inclusion here. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs
) 16:59, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
@DerbyCountyinNZ: Just because he didn't get an article until now (I was shocked when I originally saw he didn't have a page) doesn't mean he doesn't qualify for the list. And while he doesn't pass any of the notability criteria you listed above, Deniston meets the most important—GNG (if you don't think so you may nominate him at AFD). So I believe he should be added, as he meets GNG and was known for more than his longevity. Also, he might be a pass of NCOLLATH as well, as it says football coaches at D-I are notable and it looks like USIU was D-I, though I'm not 100% certain. BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:24, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Meeting GNG does not, alone, qualify for this list. For these centenarian lists someone needs to be notable in their field (prior to being old), merely meeting GNG is insufficient. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 06:58, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
@DerbyCountyinNZ: What I am saying is that he meets GNG for being a sportsman. If you look at the 40+ refs in the article, you'll see nearly all of them are about him before he turned 100. So he was not just known for being old. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:11, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
I see your point but am not convinced that merits inclusion in this list. Pinging @Canadian Paul: for a more experienced opinion on this topic. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 21:47, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
The list says "The following is a list of centenarians – specifically, people who became famous as sportspeople — known for reasons other than their longevity." I see no way that Deniston would not warrant inclusion on that list, as he lived to 101 and was known for much more than living to that age. BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:59, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
The question I always ask is - would this person have a Wikipedia article if they had died much younger? In this case, I think the answer is yes, so he should be suitable for inclusion. Canadian Paul 03:03, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Please add Galip Haktanır, still living Turkish footballer (born 1 August 1921). Thanks. 65.88.88.45 (talk) 21:15, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

I found a replacement for the source in order for Man Kaur to be included ("World Masters gold medal winner Man Kaur, 105, passes away". The Indian Express. 2021-08-26. Retrieved 2022-03-18}). 24.45.0.78 (talk) 00:53, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Replace Cecil Souders' two former sources with this source (Tony Paul (2021-09-01). "Cecil 'Cy' Souders, one-time Lion and oldest NFL alum, dies at 100". The Detroit News. Retrieved 2021-09-02.) because the 2 former sources have nothing to do with him being 100 years old and also, he played for the Detroit Lions so add "(Detroit Lions)" after "American football player" but before the source okay.. {{cite web}}: Check date values in: |access-date= (help); External link in |access-date= (help); line feed character in |access-date= at position 121 (help) 24.45.6.59 (talk) 13:44, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Not done: I fail to see how a source which literally lists his age in the title has "nothing to do with him being 100 yrs old". The scope of this list seems to be more than just people notable for their longevity. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 21:13, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Bill Dellastatious

Wondering if Bill Dellastatious should be added. Living as of 2017 (95), and this twitter post states he turned 100. Now, before you say "its just a twitter post," the person who posted it is not just some random person - he's a football historian who's been cited by reliable sources several times (National WWI Museum Grand Forks Herald InsideHook) and according to PFRA he's "written extensively" for publications such as the Chicago Tribune and has written several books. Is that enough to be considered a reliable source? (I was unable to find anything else mentioning Dellastatious as turning 100). BeanieFan11 (talk) 02:22, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

I'd have thought a player and coach would have a report in a local paper at least upon reaching 100. Isn't there a NFL list of players who reached 100 (preferably with some evidence)?
There is that list, but Dellastatious didn't actually play in the NFL. Would you say that the twitter post could count as a "reliable source" or no, considering its from someone who could be described as a "subject-matter expert"? I must say I am a bit surprised that no local paper wrote about his 100th birthday. Though it also seems to be the same case with another football centenarian in Pete Wismann. BeanieFan11 (talk) 02:48, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately
WP:TWITTER doesn't help. On one hand the "there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity" on the other hand being 100 is "an exceptional claim" and the relevant statement is "based primarily on such sources". I suppose it could be added using the Tweet but with a {{Better source needed}} tag. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs
) 03:16, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
I guess I'll add it with a {better source needed} tag. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:36, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
