Kaweah River watershed

The 23 groves in the Kaweah River watershed are all in Sequoia National Park or in private ownership, except the northernmost:

  1. Redwood Mountain Grove (KCNP/GSNM). The largest grove, 1240 ha (3100 acres), with 15,800 sequoias 30 cm (one foot) or more in diameter at the base.
  2. Lost Grove. Contains no very large trees, but one tree with a large flaring base, with a perimeter of 104.6 feet (31.9 m).
  3. Muir Grove. Contains one tree of great size.
  4. Skagway Grove.
  5. Pine Ridge Grove.
  6. Suwanee Grove.
  7. 'General Sherman'
    , and 8,400 others 30 cm (one foot) or more diameter at their base.
  8. Redwood Meadow Grove.
  9. Castle Creek Grove.
  10. Atwell Mill Grove. The highest elevation Giant Sequoias are in this grove, this grove contains three trees that are among the thirty largest giant sequoias in the world.
  11. Oriole Grove.
  12. New Oriole Grove.
  13. Eden Creek Grove.
  14. Horse Creek Grove.
  15. Cahoon Creek Grove.
  16. Case Mountain Grove. Mostly in private ownership.
  17. Coffeepot Canyon Grove.
  18. Surprise Grove.
  19. Homers Nose Grove.
  20. Board Camp Grove.
  21. South Fork Grove.
  22. Garfield Grove. Home of 'King Arthur', ninth largest by volume. Now includes Dillonwood Grove.
  23. Devils Canyon Grove.

Tule River and Kern River watersheds

The 21 groves in the Tule River and Kern River watersheds are mostly in Giant Sequoia National Monument (GSNM), with some areas in Sequoia National Park (SNP), California State Forest (CSF) and Tule Indian Reservation (TIR); all in southern Tulare County.

  1. Dennison Grove (SNP).
  2. Upper Tule Grove (GSNM). Included on Forest Service GSNM map.
  3. Maggie Mountain Grove (GSNM).
  4. Silver Creek Grove (GSNM).
  5. Mountain Home Grove (CSF / GSNM). Home of the 'Genesis' tree, seventh largest by volume, this grove also contains the smaller Middle Tule Grove
  6. Burro Creek Grove (GSNM).
  7. Wishon Grove (GSNM). South of Silver Creek Grove. Included on Forest Service GSNM map.
  8. Alder Creek Grove (GSNM / private); also known as Hossack, Pixley, or Ross Creek Grove. Home of 'Alonzo Stagg', the fifth largest tree by volume. Also home to the Waterfall tree, which has the largest circumference and diameter at ground level of any sequoia.
  9. McIntyre Grove
    (GSNM).
  10. Carr Wilson Grove(GSNM); also known as Bear Creek Grove.
  11. Freeman Creek Grove (GSNM).
  12. Black Mountain Grove (GSNM / TIR / private). Heavily logged in 1984, though mature sequoias were not cut.
  13. Red Hill Grove (GSNM / private).
  14. Peyrone Grove (GSNM / TIR).
  15. South Peyrone Grove (GSNM) New discovery by Willard in 1992.
  16. Long Meadow Grove (GSNM), Site of the Trail of 100 Giants and one tree of great size.
  17. Parker Peak Grove (TIR).
  18. Cunningham Grove (GSNM).
  19. Starvation Creek Grove (GSNM).
  20. Packsaddle Grove (GSNM).
  21. Deer Creek Grove (GSNM). The southernmost grove.
