John O' Groats can be a little bleak, but if the visibilty was decent at least you will have seen Hoy in Orkney.

The islands lie to the northeast of Orkney, 280 km (170 mi) from the Faroe Islands and form part of the division between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east. - you give distance from Faroe but not Orkneys. I think both or neither is balanced here. Personally I like both.

Administratively, Shetland is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland and the islands' administrative centre and only burgh is Lerwick. - ack! I think the first word is unnecessary. Maybe subtract it and just leave blank (two "admin..." words in one sentence looks funny. actually I have a wee fix for this...watch

The other inhabited islands are: Bressay, East Burra, West Burra, Fetlar, Muckle Roe, Papa Stour, Trondra, Vaila, Unst, Whalsay and Yell in the main Shetland group, plus Foula to the south-west, Fair Isle to the south, and Housay and Bruray in the Out Skerries to the east. - a bit listy, maybe can be broken up a little. For instance, separate out the two or three which have the largest villages and list (or something), and maybe the lowest population. Anyway, be creative :)

Attempted. I think Mid Yell is probably the largest settlement outwith Mainland, but it is tiny and I have not seen any population data for it.

added - figures are not especially up-to-date.

flora section looks a bit meagre - anything else on rare plants, or locally important plants or plant communities?

This combination is reflected in many aspects of local life. - I see some in the next para (placenames), any other material which can be added to bolster this sentence (which is hanging a bit) would be good. Paras can be combined too.

Tweaked a bit. As hinted at - although it's not explicit - "Up Helly Aa" is a modern i.e. Scottish era festival that harks back to the Viking period (big time). The appearance of Valhalla Brewery may help paint the picture - although the poignant note sent to Haakon VII in 1906 sums it up I think. Shetlanders are resigned to being Scottish/British de facto, but are Norsemen at heart. (See also Noggin the Nog.) Just let me know if you want any more on this. Thanks for striking this - it's done although I have avoided the dreaded mdash - no idea why we use a character that isn't on a modern keyboard. Makes it look rather 19th century to my eye.

Transport between islands is primarily by ferry. Shetland is served by a domestic ferry connection from Lerwick to Aberdeen on mainland Scotland, operated by Northlink Ferries. - adding how long the ferry takes buffs the section a little, and emphasises its remoteness.
