I thought it was a shame this great song didn't even have a stub of an article so I wrote it, but it really needs a bit more expansion.

¶ Interesting to know that this was from the musical, Roberta, but the Wiki stub on Roberta doesn't give a clue about the plot. I would appreciate knowing how this song relates to the storyline of the show. In the 1935 film Irene Dunne simply sings this to entertain a restaurant gathering and later Fred Astaire dances to an instrumental version. 03:51, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

¶ I think that, like the song "Cry Me a River", this is a mournful recollection of a failed love affair. While the affair was active, the singer was blinded (because "your heart's on fire") to the defects of relationship, and after its breakup the singer sheds a tear (because "when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes").
