Why this map?

I noticed the idea from this map being referred to in the Talk:Russian invasion of Ukraine page. So I am commenting on this from that position.

If this map is intended to relate to the Ukraine-Russia war I think it is essential that Ukraine is included in full on the map. For reference. In addition, also for reference, it is odd to use this projection where North-South is not on the common vertical axis. Although such a Mercator type projection distorts areas it remains the most common one and for the Southern regions of this conflict is more or less ok (which is where most happens). I don't know which projection is used here (seems an Albers) but as a consequence the orientation and shape of Ukraine (the center of this conflict) is very much distorted. That seems rather problematic to me if linking to the Ukraine war

The subdivision into all the oblasts within Russia seems over the top detailed to me and creates visual clutter (and other states are not subdivided into regional subsections).

Given the use in the Ukraine war article, the dashed Crimea colour is odd. Either we acknowledge Crimea is Ukrainian (no dashing) or we acknowledge it is a contested annexed and Russia controlled area (with the dashing indicating the contested status). But if we do that all other occupied areas (particularly those that Russia has annexed) must also be dashed. The current choice seems to adopt the 2014-2022 situation which is no longer valid.

I am not sure what the markers about Islamists do here as they seem not to have been involved in this conflict at all. I am also not convinced that raids (by the freedom of Russia legion) should amount to contested control markers.

I think there should also be airstrike / naval strike markers for single attacks. For example the drone strikes on Engels-2 (air base) as these have been among the most publicised attacks on Russia.

But as I also said in the invasion of Ukraine talk - I am not fully sure why we would need this map - so not sure it makes sense to make such adjustments (sorry I cannot help as I have no idea how to tinker with map templates in a sensible way). Arnoutf (talk) 11:01, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for adding so much to the map, but there is also Kursk Oblast. Lukt64 (talk) 15:02, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe a centralized discussion would be the best way to determine all these parameters. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 17:22, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Include Kursk Oblast?

There is also clashes there. Lukt64 (talk) 15:51, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, please find a way to add it without adding all of russia. people have no need to see siberia, where there are no clashes whatsoever @Lukt64 68.132.201.101 (talk) 01:03, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

– This map only shows the Belgorod region, not all of Russia, nor is there any real conflict outside of belgorod kursk, and maybe bryansk and vorozenh 68.132.201.101 (talk) 21:38, 25 March 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). – robertsky (talk) 03:02, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
