Reception
The Psychopath Test was well received but also came in for criticism, largely from professional psychiatrists. Its writing style was lauded but the main criticism was a lack of depth in investigating psychopathy.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
The Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy (SSSP) published a statement – signed by some of the scientists featured in Ronson's book, including Robert D. Hare and Essi Viding – stating that certain interviews in it were exaggerated or fictionalised and that they "think that Ronson's book trivializes a serious personality disorder and its measurement, which is not helpful to those who have the disorder or to their unfortunate victims". Others' complaints focused on Ronson's point of view which complainants thought was very one-sided throughout the book.[13]
Dr. Hare also released a longer rebuttal of Ronson's book, stating that it trivializes the work of clinical professionals and presents psychopathy in an unrealistic and overly simplistic manner. In contrast, he thought his own books Snakes in Suits and Without Conscience were more realistic, less sensationalist and more evidence-based depictions of sociopathy and psychopathy.[14]
Film adaptation
It was announced in February 2015 that Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment would produce a film for adaptation of the book.[15] Kristin Gore was set to write the screenplay adaptation, with Scarlett Johansson in a leading role and direction from Jay Roach.[16] However, the tentative release date of 2017 has long passed and no relevant news outlets have mentioned this production since 2015.
