Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse is a powerful and genius living machine. It gets its name ‘quarter’ from the early settlers that raced the horses a quarter of a mile. The quarter horse is a mixture of Arabian, Spanish, and English bred of horse. There are eleven foundation Quarter Horse bloodlines. These eleven families are the ancestors of horses around the world. The American Quarter Horse has been around since the 1600’s although they only became a registered bred in 1940. They are quick over short distances. Quarter Horses are very peaceful and sound horses. There is an association for the American Quarter Horse called the American Quarter Horse Association it was founded in 1940 in Forth Worth, Texas. It is based in Amarillo, Texas now and has over 350,000 members.

Traits

The American Quarter horse has a straight, fine head with small, fox-like ears. There are three distinctively known types of the Quarter horse: the "bulldog", which tends to be smaller in height but the most muscular out of the three, the Thoroughbred type, which is taller and leaner, and the mixed of the two first types. It has the characteristics of both the "bulldog" and Thoroughbred. All Quarter horses have strong backs with good withers and a sloping croup. They're well known for their strong chest. The legs are quite short, but very strong. These horses are known for their exceptionally powerful hindquarters. Quarter horses are one of the few that are very laid-back, reliable, and willing. They're also intelligent and sensible to other people and horses. There are also two main body types of a Quarter horse; the stock type and the racing type. The stock is a shorter, more compact, stocky and well muscled, yet agile. The racing Quarter horse is built to sprint short distances such as 220-870 yards, and therefore is somewhat taller and has smoother muscles than the stock type.

Colors of the American Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse comes in many different colors that could be light, dark, mixture of both light and black. These colors are listed bellow;

  • Brown
  • Hazelnut
  • White
  • Gray
  • Paint (mixture of two colors, usually white with another color)
  • Black
  • Red/orange
  • Palomino
  • Buckskin
  • Sorrel
  • Bay

Uses of the American Quarter Horse

There are many different uses for the Quarter Horse, but only 3 really stand out to people around the world. Quarter horses can be used in many events in rodeo, used in horse racing, and used in equestrian.

Rodeo

Rode consist of many different events and roles that the horse plays in the rode such as; pick up man, barrel racing, poles, team roping, break away, ect.. The horse is used in all these events for the same reason. The term pick up man means when a horse or a bull is out of control the person and the horse are needed to be there so that they could get the horse or the bull in control, American Quarter Horses are best known for their fast and string legs and being able to get somewhere in a short period of time. The other events that are involved with rodeo just consist of the horse getting from one point to other in a short period of time.


Racing

Horse racing is a popular event around the world. People invest thousands of dollars into this one event just to make a bigger and better profit on it. People will bid s much money on the horse they think will win and if they win some of the money that others bid on the other horses, more than one person can bid on the one horse at a time. American Quarter Horses are known world wide for how fast they can run the quarter mile, hence how they got the name American Quarter Horse.

Equestrian

Equestrian riding is one of the more fancier riding of one on a horse and the horse. It is a very elegant form of riding. Equestrian means of or relating to horseback riding. Equestrian riding consist of different courses which have beam poles that the horses must jump over these beam poles have different heights, which could be very high or very low. Although the horse is doing most of the work the rider must keep a very straight and perfect riding stance. The horse also has to know how to walk a certain way, trot a certain way, and look a certain way. These horses are kept well groomed and kept well care of.
