J. W. Mitchell High School (also called Mitchell or JWMHS), is a

Seven Springs Middle School. The current principal is Jessica Schultz and the school is one of the largest in Pasco County Schools

History

J. W. Mitchell High School opened at the start of the 2000-01 school year, designed to relieve overcrowding at

Gulf High Schools. It was rumored that the new school would be named 'Seven Springs High School' due to the fact that its campus sits adjacent to Seven Springs Middle School, however that was dispelled in 1999 when the actual name was revealed. The school is named for James Mitchell, a rancher, community leader and businessman. His wife Dorothy served on the school board for about 20 years. Its first graduating class was in 2002. After the opening of Anclote High School

in the 09-10 school year the school was relieved by about 69%.

State championships

During the 2009-2010 season, the Mustangs secured Pasco county's first ever soccer state championship. They beat Jacksonville Stanton 1-0, February 18, 2010.

During the 2011-2012 season, Mitchell's Hockey team won their first state championship. They beat Spanish River in Coral Springs, FL 10-2.

During the 2013-2014 season, Mitchell's Hockey team won their second state championship. They beat Seminole in Brandon, FL 9-1.

Marching band

J.W. Mitchell's band, the Marching Mustangs, has received many awards and accolades over the course of Mitchell's history. The Marching Mustangs are highly competitive and attend shows such as the Seminole Sound Spectacular, Hurricane Pride Invitational, and the Tarpon Springs Music Festival. They have received awards such as 1st place overall in the 2007-2008 Hurricane Pride Invitational, and 1st place percussion in divisional AAA during FMBC State Championships. The band has an active Jazz Ensemble, Colorguard, Percussion Ensemble and is very involved in the FBA Solo and Ensemble Festival. The program also houses 3 full concert bands. The Marching Mustang percussion ensemble had the honor of performing for Keith Urban at his concert in 2007 and as the featured percussion group at the FMEA State Convention in 2014. The band is currently under the direction of Mr. Joel Quina.
