Flooding around Oshakati
Oshakati the capital of Oshana region in the northen part of Namibia ,was widely flooded during the annual rainy seasons that take place each year. The city sits in a flat area of meandering ephemeral stream channel and salt pans that fill with water .Angola the neighbour has also received heavy rains too. The satellites shows the city in its flooded state on March 28,2009 compared to normal conditions on April 29, 2000. [1]
Oshakati is the second largest city with a population of around 42,000 people. The united Nations office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affair stated that the repeated episodes of flooding have made it difficult for Namibians to repair the damages to the bridges,roads ,buildings and houses. In response ,the founding father of the nation Dr Sam Nujoma declared a state of emergency and appealed for international aid to provide food, sanitation, clean water and temporary shelter for the people displaced by flood. Also, this has captured our mind that not only in Oshakati got flooded ,but almost Namibia at large is ever experiencing flood.
