The CIO of the Year® ORBIE® Awards is the premier technology executive recognition program of its kind. Since inception in 1998, over 400 CIOs have been honored as finalists and over 100 CIO of the Year winners have received the prestigious ORBIE Award. The Award honors chief information officers who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership. Finalists and winners are selected through an independent peer review process, led by prior ORBIE recipients.

The ORBIE Awards is a professionally produced ceremony honoring the CIO finalists and winners. The program features a high-profile executive keynote along with video introductions of the finalists and select sponsors. Sponsor executives are invited to attend an exclusive pre-event VIP reception for CIO finalists and a post-event Q&A featuring the keynote and CIO winners. Hundreds of attendees engage in networking activities as they visit the sponsor display tables both before and after the program. Media coverage is provided by the local Business Journal.

Through a scored judging process, an independent committee comprised of business and technology leaders and prior winners are nominated, judged and recognized. The first award ceremony was held in Atlanta, GA. [3] The second Orbie Awards, held in 2017, was launched in Dallas Texas.[4] - CIOs were recognized based on the following criteria: (1) The size and scope of responsibilities (2) Leadership and management effectiveness (3) Business value created by technology innovation (4) Engagement in industry and community endeavors

The ORBIE has been presented to every CIO of the Year® winner since the inception of the Awards in 1998. The ORBIE Award is synonymous with the excellence the Award represents, meticulously handcrafted from steel and crystal; symbols of honor and achievement. The ORBIE® signifies exceptional leadership, innovation, and vision; representing the characteristics and qualities that inspire others to achieve their potential.

Awards Events

Nominees participate in a series of award recognition events in each market. Celebratory events include:

Nominee Reception - All CIOs nominated for the CIO of the Year Awards are invited to attend the Nominee Reception. This executive event features an inspirational, leadership-oriented program delivered by a high-profile technology executive and recognizes all CIO nominees. Media coverage is provided by the local business journal.

Attendance is limited to CIO nominees, CIO members, CIO guests and select sponsor executives. The number of CIOs attending this program outnumbers the sponsor executives, which is a testament to the credibility of how the CIO of the Year Awards convenes CIOs. The local business journal reveals the finalists in their print and online editions, typically the Friday following the Nominee Reception.

Finalist Reception - The Finalist Reception, held 4-6 weeks after the Nominee Reception, honors CIO finalists in categories such as Nonprofit/Public Sector, Corporate, Enterprise and Global. Finalists revealed by the local business journal are introduced and honored at the Finalist Reception. By tradition, prior CIO of the Year winners introduce the incoming CIO of the Year finalists. Attendance is limited to CIO finalists, CIO members, CIO guests and select sponsor executives.

Executive Dinner - The most exclusive event in the CIO of the Year program is the Executive Dinner. This multi-course dinner, with a chef-introduced menu and sommelier-selected wine pairings, is led by CIO finalists and attended by CIO members and select sponsor executives. All Gold and Silver level sponsor executives are personally introduced by a CIO, who has the opportunity to share personal anecdotes about their most trusted business partners in front of 20-30 CIO peers and colleagues. The collegial format of this dinner is often the most highly-rated event of the Awards program by both CIOs and sponsor executives.
