The Albums Chart is a weekly record chart based on album sales from Sunday to Saturday; it was published for the first time on the week ending April 3, 1960. Prior to 1960 there was no official albums chart. During the decade, a total of 45 albums reached number one. The most successful artist of the 1960s was the English band The Beatles, who topped the Albums Chart for 190 weeks with thirteen different albums. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, their eighth studio album, was the biggest-selling album of 1967 and the biggest-selling of the decade. The first number-one album of the 1960s was the compilation Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 2, by American singer and actor Elvis Presley, while the final number one was Led Zeppelin II (1969), the second album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin.

Number-one albums

studio album by the English rock band The Beatles was the biggest-selling album of the decade; it spent 21 consecutive weeks at the top of the Albums Chart during the 1960s. The Beatles spent 190 weeks at the top of the chart, longer than any other act, with thirteen different releases, the most of any act. The Beatles also had the most entries in the top 20 best-selling albums chart with twelve different releases: their ninth studio album The Beatles, also known as the White Album (1968), became the fastest-selling album at the time and was the second biggest-selling album of the decade; their first studio album Please Please Me
(1963) was the third best-seller album of the decade; it spent a then record-breaking 23 consecutive weeks at the top, a record it held for almost a decade. The Beatles also set the record, still undefeated, for the most best-selling album of the year with six in a row.
American singer and actor Elvis Presley is the most successful solo artist of the decade, having spent 71 weeks at the summit, longer than any other soloist, with six different releases, the second most (alongside American singer Frank Sinatra) and second only to The Beatles. His fourh compilation album Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 2 (1959) is the 10th best-seller of the 1960s and the most successful by a male artist.
The Doors (1967), the debut studio album by American rock band The Doors, is the sixth best-selling album of the decade, despite it never reached the top spot.
