UWRF St. Thomas More Newman Center

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Newman Center is a club on campus that is dedicated to serving students of any denomination, most specifically Catholics. As of the 2012-2013 school year Deacon Thomas Weiss is the resident chaplain and often his wife, Mary, will assist with different activities. They own three buildings consisting of a chapel and two houses; one which houses the center and up to three men and the second housing up to five women. The houses are rented out by college students in a similar fashion as with apartments.

Location

The Newman center is located across the street from the main

UWRF campus. The contact information for the 2013 executive board members of the club and location information for the center can be found at this website. [1]

Activities

The center offers a wide variety of activities both weekly and monthly that provide social, service, and spiritual opportunities for students. Many times students in the group will organize different activities amongst themselves and advertise them to the rest of the group. With new students joining the group often new activities or ideas are suggested and some stick while others do not as much. The fellowship of having other college students that are striving to grow in their faith is very encouraging to those that choose to be involved with the Newman center. Patrick Houlton the club's vice president relates that he found a spiritual community upon coming to the Newman center during his freshman year.[2]

Some examples of common social activities provided include game nights, movie nights, and parties for holidays. A favorite social activity is the meal of the month and last lecture series. What this entails is a meal that is followed by a professor coming to give their last lecture. Another weekly favorite is the free lunch that is provided by Tom and Mary, which is a great way to fellowship while enjoying some free food at the same time. We are able to partake in service work as well. Some common opportunities include doing a spring break mission trip, serving a community meal at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in town. At Christmas time we go caroling to the local nursing home and then following that we have a party at the Newman Center. In both the fall and spring the students help with cleaning up around the property.

There are many opportunities that are made available to the students to grow in their faith and spirituality along with fellow students that have common values. Every week there are some events that happen regularly and other times events will take place only every once in while. We have daily night prayer at 9 PM, Sunday mass at 8 PM, Wednesday at 7 PM we have a bible study and free lunch once a week. During lent the free lunch is on Fridays while at other times it may be on a different day. We have had adoration offered twice during the 2012-2013 school year and talks on Catholicism 101 to learn our faith more fully. For a more up-to-date schedule you can take a look at the website [3] which is kept current for the most part. During the 2012-2013 school year one of the group members introduced us to Cor Jesu which is hosted by the University of St. Thomas.
