Film and television

In 1982, Rodgers and Edwards produced the soundtrack for the movie Soup for One. As Chic, they wrote and performed three songs, including the film's title track. Edwards and Rodgers also wrote and produced Carly Simon's "Why", a top 10 hit in the UK that helped resurrect Simon's career. The soundtrack, which also featured Sister Sledge, Debbie Harry, and Teddy Pendergrass, was a bigger hit than the film. ^[1][2][3]

Rodger's became increasingly in-demand as a producer and composer for film and television following the success of the Soup for One soundtrack. In 1984, he produced Al Jarreau's theme for the television series Moonlighting; he wrote, produced and scored the soundtrack for Alphabet City and worked with Laurie Anderson on her concert film, Home of the Brave in 1986. ^[4] In 1988, in addition to producing the soundtrack for Earth Girls Are Easy, he composed the orchestral score for Eddie Murphy's Coming to America. He additionally served as the film's music supervisor, and wrote and produced its title track, a hit for The System. ^[1] He also wrote the jingle for the Soul Glo commercial, "the most iconic fake ad in cinematic history." ^[5][6]

In 1999, he executive produced, scored, music-supervised and appeared in Public Enemy, a documentary about the Black Panthers. In a review of the soundtrack, critic Maria Blandford wrote: "The disc realistically supports the conflicting and controversial nature of this historical period, and opens the arena for present-day discussion and evaluation...this recording is an examination of the American conscience." ^[7]

In the 2010s, music by Rodgers was featured in movies including Arctic Tale and Bridget Jones's Baby, as well as on the TV shows Vinyl, The Get Down, and Horrid Henry, among others. In 2019, he collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the soundtrack for the film Cats. ^[13] In 2023 it was announced that he and The-Dream were co-writing music for the Mark Anthony Green horror film, Opus. ^[14]

Rodgers was interested in Halo because he had just founded Sumthing Else Music Works, a record label specialising in the licensing and distribution of video game soundtracks. In June 2002, Sumthing Else enjoyed its first release: the Halo Original Soundtrack. As most of the music in the game was interactive, O'Donnell and Salvatori reassembled many of the pieces so they could be in a suite or enjoyed as a standalone experience. Fans loved it. With over 40,000 copies sold, its success helped to establish Sumthing Else as the flagship record label for video game soundtracks, and the label went on to release over 200 other scores from series such as Gears Of War, Uncharted, Resident Evil and Assassin's Creed.

Rodgers has composed music for film, television, and video game soundtracks. Hollywood plans to promote Diffuser, the game, and the soundtrack through MTV. Rodgers' belief in the importance of music in games is reflected in the licensing activity of a growing number of game makers.
