Introduction

the transformative journey of performance art in China, marking it as a vibrant force that challenges and redefines the boundaries of artistic expression.[1]

Historical Context

In the 21st century, performance art in China has continued to evolve in response to shifting social dynamics and technological advancements. Artists increasingly utilise digital media and interactive platforms to engage audiences and explore new modes of performance. Moreover, efforts to document and preserve ephemeral acts of performance art have become paramount. As Park (2016) elucidates in "The Artist Was Present: Documentation, Reconstruction, and Interpretation of Performance Art in China," published in Third Text, a crucial aspect emerges—ensuring that ephemeral acts of performance art are preserved for future generations to experience and interpret within their socio-historical contexts.[2]

Like most artists of their generation, Zhang and Ma were deeply influenced by translations of modern Western art history and the new art experiments by Chinese artists in the 1980s.  [3]

Answers to Module 7 Questions

1、Describe your media: The image I have chosen is In A Blink Of An Eye, a work by Chinese performance artist Xu Zhen, which presents the theme of a breathing body floating in mid-air, as if frozen in time and space, as if oblivious to physical constraints. The work deals with the materiality of the body, testing the limits of physical and cognitive possibilities as we try to understand what we see.
