William Cronon's chapter on lumber discussed the importance of Chicago in its placement. The placement bordering the Northern forests and the Great Plains situated Chicago to be the focal point of the lumber industry. Further, the midwestern lumber dynasty declined when railroads expanded past the growing metropolis. The dynasty declined even further when the South’s yellow pine was introduced into the lumber market. American Forests discusses the conservation group beginning in Chicago founded by John Aston Warder. [1]
