Carrollton Avenue runs for 3.9 miles through the Uptown and Mid City district in New Orleans, Louisiana. South Carrollton Avenue begins from St. Charles Avenue to Canal Street.
History
Carrollton Avenue began as part of McCarthy Plantation. It was first settled by American troops under General William Carrollton of Tennessee who set up camp in the area during the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. General Carrollton named the area Carrollton, New Orleans. This area became a popular place to live, as it was six miles downriver of New Orleans, Louisiana. By 1837, a Carrollton Railroad company had establish railroads tracked between New Orleans, and a resort at which is now St Charles Avenue. The town existed for 30 years; In 1874, Carrollton was annexed to New Orleans. However, this wasn't completed until 1876. Once annexed, the name was Canal Street, but to avoid confusion with the downtown Canal Street, the name was changed to Carrollton Avenue.
Modern Day
South Carrollton Avenue runs from St. Charles Avenue to Canal St. It intersects at Oak Street and Maple Street. Carrollton Avenue is line with huge trees, along with houses with Creole architecture and distinctive finishes. The St Charles Streetcar line also runs down South Carrollton Avenue. There are places to visit on South Carrollton Ave; There are plenty of diner-style restaurants to choose from, and many places to shop or have drinks. This avenue is a popular tourist attraction.
