The Loud Music Librarian is a former high school Library Media Specialist who is interested in promoting popular music into the high school curriculum. Jamie Knight, AKA the Loud Music Librarian is also the director of The Commercial Recording Arts Department at The Huntington Beach High School Academy for the Performing Arts. Knight has an MLIS degree from San Jose State University and is a protege of Dr. David V. Loertscher.The Loud Music Librarian was originally hired to be the School Library Media Specialist for Fountain Valley and Ocean View High School and quickly gained noteriety for a series of Battle of the Bands intended to support the FVHS Library. Knight was hired by the Huntington Beach High School Academy for the Performing Arts in 2004 to develop the Commercial Recording Arts Department (AKA CRAD)


CRAD students follow a Digital Media Arts pathway that creates artists first and technicians second. The CRAD courses all receive UC Visual Performing Arts Credit and The CRAD curriculum is aligned with the new Career & Technical Education standards as well as embracing the new ISTE standards for integrating technology into the classroom. CRAD students learn basic audio and video skills during their Freshmen & sophomore years in the course entitled Songwriting and Recording. In this course they learn to communicate digitally via the Apple’s iLife suite of software and are trained to work independently and in small project based learning groups.

Their Junior Year in the course Music Technology I, they master Apple's Logic Software.

The senior year students enroll in Music Tech II and apply “real world” skills to their studies. Our students have job shadowed at Roland Electronic Keyboard..CRAD students learn to read technical manuals and our taught all aspects of sound including sound reinforcement, synthesis and audio engineering.

CRAD has received national and international recognition via articles in Apples Inc.’s web site and a featured article in Music Education & Technology magazine. The students have travelled to Liverpool to perform at The Cavern Club, performed at the NAMM show 2008 for Roland Education and enjoyed having the John Lennon Songwriting Bus parked outside their classroom in January of 2008.
