Counter Culture Labs (CCL) is a community science and biohacker laboratory in Oakland, California dedicated to open science projects outside of the traditional structures of academia and industry. Counter Culture Labs is perhaps best known for their community-based Real Vegan Cheese[1] project, a joint project with the BioCurious hackerspace which aims to create a vegan source for cheese protein using genetic engineering techniques, and won the Best Community Project prize at iGEM in 2014.

genetic modification, outside the more common spheres of industry and academia; and prompted the web site Kickstarter to adopt a new policy on genetically modified plants as incentive gifts.[3]
