The story follows a Haitian sugarcane Baron who is saved by his

termite mound.The Baron's wife becomes jealous of the Termite King because his mound is larger than her house. They betray the Termite King which causes the desolation of their property.[1][2]

The only written record of the folktale was found in Quito, Ecuador, in a desk belonging to Francisco Luis Héctor de Carondelet. Carondelet was the governor of Louisiana from 1791-1797 and was known for his slave code requiring better treatment of slaves for fear of more uprisings. [3]
