Fictional Biography

Novels

Yennefer is a Sorceress in the world of The Witcher. Yennefer was born in Belleteyn but grew up on a farm in Vengerberg. During which, she was a Hunchback and had a horrible childhood thanks to her father, who blamed Yennefer's deformity on her mother. The reason for Yennefer's father's detest towards her and her mother was due to the fact they had mages and elven blood, not to mention her mother having had an abortion prior. Her father left for another woman sometime after, but Yennefer was still being abused; her mother, who originally wanted to protect her, was upset with the situation and took her anger out on Yennefer. She would soon be recognized for her magic potential and drafted to become a sorceress at the school, 'Aretuza'. She would be under the guidance of a rectoress Tissaia de Vries who would became a mother figure for her. Yennefer was still frustrated and angry about her past and attempted to kill herself be slitting both her wrists. Luckily, she survived and, with encouragement from Tissaia, continued her training at Aretuza. Tradition in Aretuza states that any flaw was to be removed magically. Yennefer had her huntchback removed later on. Yennefer would continue making freinds there and pass all her tests, allowing her to graduate as a sorceress.

A pale triangular face, violet eyes and narrow, slightly contorted lips appeared beneath the black tresses...She had pretty shoulders, a shapely neck and, around it, a black velvet choker with a star-shaped jewel sparkling with diamonds.

Yennefer would now start her own adventure and fate as she left Aretuza. She would find herself in a town called Rinde, also ignoring King Heriberts law that mages and sorceresses would not stay in Redania. She openly practiced and used magic for her clients, without fear, while under the protection of asylum as she stayed in the ambassador of Novigrad's home. A witcher barged inside one morning, which had awoken her. At the request of Geralt of Rivia, who sought her help, he asked for her powers. His friend, Dandelion, the Bard, had been attacked by a Jinn and was in bad condition. Yennefer agreed to help the witcher and healed the bard, although secretly betraying them afterward in order to control the Jinn herself. After the bard was healed and at her request to make his final wish, Geralt tried to stop her but ended up bewitched by her and killed members of the council that were against her. She would begin the ritual to capture the Jinn. Thinking that Dandelion held the wish, she told him to wish Geralt free and teleported him away. She would begin struggling to control the Jinn as it was in fact Geralt that held the last wish. He would barge into her room and attempt to stop her; and in her weakened state she told him that the last wish must be made. Geralt made a wish and protected her from harm. That was the beginning of their relationship and fate.

She later on took quests and jobs as Geralt left her alone. During this time, she would pleasure herself with other men and try to find her own sense of comfort, even if secretly wishing to she Geralt again. They would meet up a few more times before she met

Cirilla
, in which, after some dispute and mistakes, became Ciri's mother figure and taught her at Kaer Morhen, a witcher's fort. Yennefer, in turn, saw Ciri as her daughter.

Literary Analysis and Reception

Yennefer can be described as a non-classic but head strong character. She is a carefree yet bewitching person, willing to use her powers however she pleases to help herself and her allies usually at the cost of her enemies and non-participating parties. She has both taken lives of many and is unnaturally powerful, she is mature although with a slight childish side to her that is rarely radiated in the novels. She is obsessed with her magic and also has a motherly relationship towards Ciri.
