Captain Peter Turner, MNI

I commenced a career in the British Merchant Navy in 1961 and in 1971 passed his examinations and was issued a British Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner of a Foreign Going vessel. I was employed by P&O, Island Fruit Refrigeration, Ellerman City Liners and Star Shipping (UK) I sailed on tankers general cargo passenger, refrigerated cargo, bulk/unit load vessels in ranks of Apprentice to Chief Officer. In 1981 I returned to Canada and joined Canadian Marine Drilling, working in the Arctic aboard Supply Vessels, Construction Barges and Icebreakers as Chief Officer and Master. I was seconded into the Head Office in 1982 as Marine Safety Officer and again in 1985 to assist in the supervision of the building of a barge in Japan, its tow into the Arctic and its subsequent mating with an existing drilling unit to form a bottom founded MODU. In 1988/9 I was involved in setting up a training campus for the Indonesian Offshore Industry. In1990 I returned to Canada and was employed, first in Prince Rupert and then Saint John as Harbour Master. In 1991 I converted my certificate to a Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner (Unlimited), and revalidated this in 2003. In the role of Harbour Master I has been involved in a number of port developments and projects which have required him to obtain substantial knowledge of the legislation surrounding the Marine and Port Industries, and the processes for obtaining the necessary approvals. I have served as Ice Advisor in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

As the sole proprietor of Marine Transportation Consulting, I have inspected vessels requiring Ship Security Assessments in accordance with the ISPS code; provided necessary marine expertise for the approval process and the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal in the Strait of Canso; a federal government instigated risk assessment to ascertain the need for compulsory pilotage; expertise

In 2002 Turner attended the Executive Course at Queen’s University.

I am a Member of the Nautical Institute, a past Vice President of the International Harbour Masters’ Association, and am the present National Master of the Company of Master Mariners of Canada.
