Peter Zabriskie born in Bergen County, New Jersey in the Spring of 1953. Just one of many that hold this this name. I am Peter Hastings Zabriskie son of Marion Wheelock and Everett Law Zabriskie Jr. I am passionate about American Revolutionary War Era History and it's preservation. Of course about Peter Zabriskie host to General George Washington as he retreated across the Hudson River to Hackensack. I grew up in "Hardscrabble" of my father's day, Ridgewood in my day. The 1950's and 1960's. I grew vegetables as soon as I could dig a hole in the earth. Jersey corn and Jersey tomatoes, and all sorts of greens as peas, string beans, lettuce, onions and beets. All on a farm where my father was born in the kitchen and my grandfather built the 3rd story. Down the Maple Avenue, lined with tall Sugar Maples Drew Lester, our neighbor farmer, plowed his corn fields with his horse well into the 1970's. North towards the higher hills Tice's Farms grew pumpkins and apple orchards. Making cider from the vast orchards so hundreds of families could meet in the Autumn with their children and prepare for Thanksgiving, and Halloween. Now they are steel and glass corporate offices. Our American Revolutionary Spirit and the Liberty written into our Constitution by the likes of Alexander Hamilton, who resided in Ho-Ho-Kus for a time in the Hermitage will never be erased. The iron forged in the Ringwood and Sterling furnaces will be the tie that binds. "Here's to King George. King George Washington!" so said Peter Zabriskie of Hackensack. Cincinnatus taught us well. Give to get. Stand up for those knocked down. Don't be backwards about coming forward. Keep the faith.
