List of Suggestions for Wikipedia Improvements

Here is a list of all my ideas for improvements that i think Wikipedia could benefit from. If you already know about such article that exists somewhere please point me to it. Also, my knowledge of wikipedia is very limited right now, so i may be listing here ideas that where: solved already, dismissed as wrong, or just not really exist. So please fix this list if you see any mistake.

Main Wikipedia Structure

• Here is possible solution for the battle between the "Clean, Notable only" Wikipedia, to "Full, Everything Included" Wikipedia. the articles that are considered less notable may be created under some kind of "flag", so every wiki user would not see these articles unless he specifically clicks on check-box that says: "Show not notable articles too". In that way we will create two wikipedias simultaneously: One is clean and the other is full! And all this without actually forking the data!

Automated Tools & Bots

• Prune bot - this tool will scan list of missed articles and remove from it all articles that where already created (blue not red).
• Unprune bot - checks every article removed from the list by user, and if the article was wrongly removed (red) bring it back to list.
• Bot that will go over all wikipedia tables and insert ability to sort by any column.

MediaWiki Software Improvements

• Treat the topic names as not case sensitive for the first letter only, so the topic like
  Jose Santos Chocano
  . There maybe other special letters like this: ó,ł,ć, etc...
• Add Normal WYSIWYG Editor!
• Instead of multiple redirections use smart suggestions when user is typing (like Google)

Wiki Editor Improvements

• Create ability to use simple formulas like in excel, with reference to parameters even in other wikipedia articles. for example: total number of missing articles left = Articles from Hotlist + General List + EB1911 + ...
• Change font size, change identation.

List of objects to improve

• Types of Graphical Info Lists (each type should have it's own list):

 Each entry is a List of Articles that can benefit from having this Graphical Info

 Representation (articles that need one or more of these to better explain the idea.

 This list will help people with relevant skills to find the articles 

 they want to contribute to easier).

• Template List - list of articles that need a template. (e.g. in all articles that describe one type of many possible, for instance: W_engine )
• Comparisons List - list of articles that need a comparison table. (e.g. Comparison of Text Editors)
• Make a hot list of most searched subjects that returned "article not found" in Wikipedia. Even if the subject was not present in any encyclopedia before or was considered not notable, it should be reconsidered because of the search misses.
• Make a more comprehensive list of Missing Articles, by compiling a list of all the Special Encyclopedia like: Encyclopedia of Weapons, Wonders, Mysteries, etc...
• Fix Articles that have structure problems: i.e. All the headline are of the same size, it is not clear where is topics and where is subtopics in the article...
• Gather more statistics about wikipedia, make a list of all possible statistics and trends that we may collect: e.g. number of Science only articles, Number of active wikipedians leaving wikipedia, etc... WikiXRay
• Make all this statistics update automatically and in real time!

Other

• Using suggested above formulas fix everywhere variables that need to be automatically updated (like all statistics and other lists), e.g. in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles there are a lot of statistics numbers that are recalculated each time by the users, this should be done automatically.
• Introduce Tags system. Currently the Categories are wrongly used more to just tag, and not actually Categorise in some meaningful structure like should be.
• Make Wikipedia appearance personalized per user: e.g. disable current events, featured, etc.. Leave only clean encyclopedia.

To Do

• Find out if it is possible currently to use formulas.
• Read the talk-pages of important maintains subjects
• Develop guidelines for adding articles from other sources:
  • • Should article named X & Y be created as two separate articles X, Y ?
    • What about incorrect spelling or accentuation, should a redirect be created?
    • What about complete and incomplete names for the same thing? If we where to create all possible redirects for title with five words it becomes 5! possibilities.
