Based on reviews from screenings at festivals, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an approval rating of 88% from 8 reviews, with an average rating of 7.8/10.[11]

The film's critical reception praised its candid portrayal of M.I.A and the storytelling threads presented by Loveridge using archival material.(Variety) The Guardian criticised that M.I.A. received no directorial credit, given that from her own footage is where the film "sources its greatest energy".(The Guardian)

The film surprised Simran Hans (BFI) for lacking exploration of M.I.A.'s musical process, style or production, atypical of biographical documentaries in the music genre.(BFI)

The Star wrote that M.I.A. was uncomfortable with Loveridge's editing decisions and that she thought Loveridge intended to cut together a tour documentary (The Star).
