My name is Sierra Mullins. I am twenty years old, which seems completely unimaginable to me. I have two sisters, a brother, and I am the aunt of three terrible, I mean wonderful, nephews and a diva of a niece. I am from a very small town in southwestern Virginia. There are a total of five restaurants, three gas stations, and a grocery store in our entire county. There isn’t much to do for fun other than have bonfires and run our trucks through the mud. Everyone knows everyone and you pretty much have the same friends your entire life.

I come from a very large family, and I mean very large. My mother has 6 other siblings and each one of them now have their own families. Needless to say, family gatherings can get a little difficult. My dad passed away last March and it has been the biggest struggle of my life. I had lived in the same house, with the same parents, doing the same routines for the past seventeen years. After my dad passed away my mom moved in with her aging parents who could no longer live on their own. I had to move in with my sister, her husband, and their two kids. Being the youngest of my siblings it has been difficult for me to learn to live with two younger, aggravating, screaming, demanding children. However, I love them very much and going a couple days without them around seems so strange now. I often forget that quiet is actually a reality for some people. Sometimes I wonder how parents keep their sanity!

I began my college journey in West Virginia. I attended Fairmont State University last semester and loved every minute of it. I lived on campus, made my own rules, got a job, and did as I pleased. My boyfriend of seven years got a scholarship to play football at Fairmont and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to escape my small town. I loved the school, the freedom, and my friends but being six hours from home was just not my forte. I moved back home and am currently enrolled in my second semester of college at Pikeville University. I am majoring in Biology and pre-med with the aspiration to attend med-school and become a pediatric surgeon. I know it’s big dreams for a small town girl but I believe in myself. I have the drive and will power to do anything that I set my mind to. I have always known that I wanted to go into the medical field but I could never decide what to do. I have switched from physical therapist, to doctor, to anesthesiologist, to surgeon a lot. I see so many people who are in their forties and fifties going back to school because they can no longer find jobs or because they hate what they do. I have never wanted to be that person. I am a planner, I like to plan for everything and this is the rest of my life we are talking about. I have to make a decision I will be able to live with for the rest of my life. And let’s face it, if I spend eight more years in school I better be extremely satisfied with what I’m doing. For now I am just learning to be a better me and striving for greatness in everything I do.

My relationship to technology

My relationship to technology began at a very young age. Having older siblings who were constantly needing to be on the computer for something, I learned very quickly how to use one. I have always been a pc person and I find that Macs are sometimes hard to navigate. Maybe that’s because I have never really become familiar with one. Until my college career I had never even used a Mac. I am certified in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint 2007 and find them very easy to use. I am a social media lover. I believe that Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are some of the best creations of my time. I think social media is a great way to communicate and keep in contact with people who you cannot see or talk to everyday.

I think there is a fine line between being involved in social media and being overtaken by social media. I believe that phones during a meal should be against the law. If you can’t put your phone down and spend an uninterrupted thirty minutes with your family you need to be institutionalized. One of the problems with people today is how involved they are in technology. People cannot go an entire day without a cell phone or checking Facebook. If we spent as much time with family or doing charity work as we did online this country would be in much better condition.

I know it may sound like I am an opposed to technology but that is not true. I love technology and I think everyone should use it. However, there are times when no technology can be a wonderful thing. Technology in moderation can open a whole new world for many people. Technology is the gateway to a very bright future.

My attitude towards Wikipedia

The world of Wikipedia is new to me. My relationship to Wikipedia has been somewhat brief. I have always been told by teachers that Wikipedia is not a credible source. Anyone can edit the content and put whatever they like on the page. Therefore, I have always assumed that the information of Wikipedia was not a good source of information. When googling information I often see Wikipedia as one of the first options, but I rarely click the link. I only recently became aware that you could create an account. I somewhat feel like I have been misguided as a student in regard to Wikipedia. There is information on Wikipedia that I believe to be credible, but I still believe there are many more corrections that need to be made in order to change the way scholars view Wikipedia.

I recently read Clay-Foot Titan and my view on Wikipedia has somewhat shifted. I did not know other members of the Wikipedia community could edit the content. I knew nothing about the administrative process (which I strongly disagree with). In order to be in a position of that power you should have to have a degree or qualification rather than a certain number of edits and corrections. With no requirements on administrative positions it is hard to believe that the corrections made are even correct. This has helped to improve my view on Wikipedia but I’m still not totally on board. I think the idea of Wikipedia as a world encyclopedia is excellent. The way of retrieving the information for the encyclopedia is somewhat unreliable. It would be merely impossible to edit every Wikipedia page, therefore some of the content will still be unreliable. I think I will begin to use Wikipedia as a credible source for most of my English assigments.
