Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support model that was developed at the [www.umkc.edu ] [University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC)] in 1973 and utilizes peer assisted study sessions. The SI program targets traditionally difficult academic courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions. The SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings and develop organizational tools and predict test items.

Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together. The sessions are facilitated by “SI leaders”, students who have previously done well in the course and who attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as model students. This form of academic assistance is attached directly to selected courses at the undergraduate, graduate and professional school levels.

The Supplemental Instruction model has been adopted by colleges and universities within the

U.S.
as well as at the [international level.] [The International Center for SI] is located at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in
Kansas City, Missouri
within the [Center for Academic Development]. Every two years, the [International Center for SI] hosts an [International Conference on Supplemental Instruction] where administrators, educators, SI leaders, and students gather to share new research and ideas pertaining to SI.
