Hi there one of the most popular sites " Kate Middleton / Duchess of Cambridge" has a section toward the end on her ancestry which is totally based on "likelihoods" and "possibilities". It is all not proven!! "martinvl" is the persons name. He is RELENTLESS and has been in trouble many times. I might be misreading the text but I don't think it states anywhere that global usernames must be older than six months? Only that there must be no global contribs within the last six months and that the local account must be older than six months. Mato (talk) 17:32, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would appear to me that each bullet point refers to the account on the English Wikipedia unless otherwise stated. It is clearer in the section above (where it says "If the account has any edits" etc.) the second bullet point states:

"Account has fewer than about fifteen global edits...none of which were within the last year"

which clearly refers to global edits, as stated. However the third bullet point states:

"Last edit was made over one year ago"

which clearly refers to edits on the English Wikipedia, as there would be no point in specifying a time scale twice.
It would therefore seem to me that when the guide says:

"If the similar account has zero edits on the English Wikipedia"

it is referring only to the account on the English Wikipedia because this is the "similar account" - we wouldn't decline a request if there was a similar name on a foreign wiki but no similar name on enwiki. It is this (enwiki) similar account that we are concerned with (though as the first bullet point in this section states, global checks should also be run). I therefore think that the guide doesn't imply that an account with a similar name on a foreign wiki must be older than six months. That's my two cents anyway - I might be interpreting it wrong. This is a policy, not poetry. People tend to be pretty forward when making policies, and as such if the policy says what it does, instead of assuming it means something more complicated than what it says just assume that it can be taken at face value. Can you please drop this, rather than continuing to harass me on my talk page for no reason? You deferred my request to users stating that you "don't follow the comments", and then have left me three messages on my talk page over the interpritation of the policy - give it up. News and progress from RfA reform 2011

The number of nominations continues to nosedive seriously, according to

radical alternative, or by fiat from elsewhere

A lot of work is constantly being done behind the scenes by the coordinators and task force members, such as monitoring the talk pages, discussing new ideas, organising the project pages, researching statistics and keeping them up to date. You'll also see for example that we have recently made tables to compare how other Wikipedias choose their sysops, and some tools have been developed to more closely examine !voters' habits.

The purpose of

; do check out older threads before starting a new one on topics that have been discussed already, and if you start a new thread, please revisit it regularly to follow up on new comments.

The object of

WT:RFA
, the project has two clearly defined goals:

  1. Improving the environment that surrounds RfA in order to encourage mature, experienced editors of the right calibre to come forward, pass the interview, and dedicate some of their time to admin tasks.
  2. Discouraging, in the nicest way possible of course, those whose RfA will be obvious NOTNOW or SNOW, and to guide them towards the advice pages.

The fastest way is through improvement to the current system. Workspace is however also available within the project pages to suggest and discuss ideas that are

We already know what's wrong with RfA
- let's not clutter the project with perennial chat. RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all the task force needs to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion where the entire Wikipedia community will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus.

New tool Check your RfA !voting history! Since the editors' RfA !vote counter at X!-Tools has been down for a long while, we now have a new RfA Vote Counter to replace it. A significant improvement on the former tool, it provides a a complete breakdown of an editor's RfA votes, together with an analysis of the participant's voting pattern.

Are you ready to help? Although the main engine of RFA2011 is its task force, constructive comments from any editors are always welcome on the project's various talk pages. The main reasons why

WT:RfA was never successful in getting anything done are that threads on different aspects of RfA are all mixed together, and are then archived where nobody remembers them and where they are hard to find - the same is true of ad hoc threads on the founder's talk page

help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing

the new Article Feedback Tool
, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org or drop a note on my talkpage, and I'm happy to give you a quick walkthrough in a one-on-one session :).

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

  • Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
  • Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism;

NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool

Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool
, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

New Pages update

Hey Ajraddatz/Archive :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As

the enwiki page notes
, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our

Engagement Strategy
on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in

project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. No bad feelings at all. I understand why you reverted my edit, and now that I know about the guideline I'll try to follow it in the future - I didn't bring it up much because I do understand the importance of all dabs following the same style. I don't particularly care that my edit was reverted either - I'm experienced enough to know how to go back and change it again while fixing the error. But not everyone is so wiki-literate, hence my suggestion of fixing the error instead of reverting the entire thing - it takes a little more time to fix the specific error, but could be worth it in the end. I'm in the dab project, and the edit error rate on dab edits is high. Often over 50%. I'm coming to the conclusion that we need to inform (possibly guide) editors more. Ideally, editors shouldn't have to learn the dab MOS at all. The blunt tool is to revert as editors then get feedback on the exact edit with links showing why, rather than dab editors cleaning up a dab periodically (for all dabs) and them not getting feedback (which is how it's often done). With an error rate that high I can understand taking the easier route. I wonder how to better inform editors though - there is already an editnotice which people probably don't read (I know I didn't, but I'm terrible for never reading notices). Perhaps it could be made more visible, or follow similar formatting as the DABYESNO page? JS/CSS pages have individual line warnings for errors in code; it would be very difficult to make, but I've always thought it would be lovely to somehow use a similar system to apply the MOS when editing regular pages. You can click the 'edit' button to access the code to copy tables and such, though please keep in mind that if you copy it you'll need to link back to the Wikipedia page from the destination, or Special:Export the page and Special:Import it on your wiki.
