Book, I reverted your change to the OS page. The original "operating systems contain ..." was correct, not "operating systems contains"; you confused the progressive verb with the plural noun. The pronunciation guide "goo-ey" is not formal phonetics but is useful, so I reverted the whole chnage instead of merely the grammatical mistake. I hope you agree that this is minor. If problems drop me a note at my user talk page. Pete St.John 16:03, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your cordial reply (at my Talk). The pronunciation "gooey" may be an Americanism, but since we say "you eye" for "UI" it could be an embarassing mistake for some kid to say "gee you eye" in a job interview, so on the whole I think noting "gooey" is a good thing. If in e.g. the UK "gee you eye" is used then the Americanism could be noted as such, but the US currently drives much informatics jargon.
There may be 0, 1, or more GUI on a system. In Unix XWindows is normal, although there is a choice of window mangangers (e.g. fvwm) and "desktops" (e.g. Gnome, KDE), but other GUI systems are build with e.g. TCL/TK. Microsoft since about Win95 is the only OS I know that integrates the GUI with the OS; in general, it's an application that can be swapped out. Pete St.John 13:28, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the convo at my page :-) yeah, I used to say "gee you eye" also, back in the day, but "gooey" is proliferating. Language evolves, not always in beautiful ways :-) Pete St.John 19:21, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
